On the occasion of its 140th anniversary, the Rembrandt Association has set up a voting campaign with the most beloved works of art that it has helped collect for the Netherlands since 1883. The work of art with the most votes will be included on the Rembrandt Card 2024, the pass that gives its members free access to 125+ museums throughout the Netherlands. Snow landscape with ditch (Sneeuwlandschap met sloot) by Jan Mankes is the entry of Museum Belvédère.
Fifty museums nominated a supported work of art for the voting campaign and almost 5,500 voters choose their favorite from all those entries. With a majority of 810 votes won Snow landscape with ditch!
Not Vermeer, Rembrandt or Van Gogh, but Jan Mankes is the big winner of the voting campaign of the Rembrandt Association.
Jan Mankes (1889 - 1920) - Snow landscape with ditch (1913) was purchased in 2011 with the support of the Rembrandt Association and the Ottema Kingma Foundation.
The painting can be seen until February 11, 2024 in the exhibition Zoltin Peeter - The North and Beyond.

Museum Belvédère looks back on a successful 5th edition of the Art Noord art fair, which was held in the museum from September 28 to October 1. A record number of 2,500 people visited the four-day fair, where 17 galleries presented themselves and AFSLAG BLV had a stand as well.
During the weekend the museum organized extra activities such as interviews and tours. During all the fair days, artist Esther IJssels created an interactive work of art, together with the visitors. The results of this interactive drawing project can be seen in the exhibition Zoltin Peeter - The North and Beyond (October 7 to February 4, 2024) Photos: Kim Nieborg.
Oranjewoud - August 22, 2023
As of August 22, 2023, our chairman Evert-Jan Rotshuizen will say goodbye to Museum Belvédère after eight years of chairmanship. His successor Seerp Leistra will take over as new chairman of the board on August 22.
Last year, Leistra (1956) left as a partner of Boer & Croon Management BV, with which he had been associated for twenty years. He held and continues to hold several administrative positions in the provinces of Fryslân, Groningen and Drenthe. Leistra has a warm interest for culture and was already a regular visitor and friend of Museum Belvédère. The board of the museum believes he is the ideal successor to Evert-Jan Rotshuizen, who has completed his two four-year terms as chairman.
Evert-Jan Rotshuizen
Rotshuizen was appointed in 2015 and guided the museum, with its board and staff, through a difficult financial period. It is partly thanks to his efforts that the museum has received structural support from the municipality of Heerenveen since 2018.
He also ensured that the museum is included in the four-year Subsidy Scheme for Museum Art Infrastructure Fryslân (2021-2024), from the province of Fryslân. This laid a stable foundation for the future. In 2018, he was the initiator of creating the Afslag BLV branch in the center of Heerenveen as a place where young artists show their work.

The monumental, expressive compositions of Jan Roos (1951) can be seen in the Groningen hospital until October 28. In line with many European contemporaries, Jan Roos developed a neo-expressionist way of working in the 1980s. He combined this international style with a strong preference for local subjects: the port areas of his hometown Harlingen. Since then, he has found constant inspiration on the dividing line between the port city and the sea.
It is not so much the view of the sea that is the subject of Jan Roos's paintings, but everything that is connected to the harbour. He himself explains about his regular subject: 'It is a reassuring thought for me that that port is always there. I have no desire to go to sea. I feel comfortable on the very edge.”
Oranjewoud - Pentecost weekend 26 to 29 May 2023
During the eleventh edition of Oranjewoud Festival, Museum Belvédère will be integrated as a whole into the versatile, four-day event. An important part of the Expedition Zone, the festival's adventurous program line, takes place in and around the Museum.
The experience of the main exhibition Like Death (Als de Dood) and the exhibition 8 Frisian Artists becomes a unique experience through the collaboration with the festival; the interface between visual art and music will be explored in numerous ways.
Museum Belvédère will form the epicenter of the Expedition Zone from May 27 to 29 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., with a collection of installations, presentations and performances in and around the museum building that stimulate the musical experience.
After 5 p.m. the Museum is the setting for individual performances.
The complete program in and around the museum can be visited with the Expedition Zone Day Ticket or an entrance ticket to the museum for € 14.00 (the Museum Card is also valid). This includes access to Festivalhart De Proeftuin and the Family Zone.
Outside opening hours, Museum Belvédère hosts a number of evening concerts in the Museum Café. A ticket must be purchased separately for this.
Oranjewoud - April 6, 2023
Over the years we have welcomed many writers in Museum Belvédère who were guests of the Foundation for Literary Activities Heerenveen (SLAH – Stichting Literaire Activiteiten Heerenveen).
On Thursday evening, April 6, Oek de Jong closed the season as the very last writer to be a guest in Museum Belvédère. The SLAH evenings will now be held in the Posthuis Theater.

The painting Tuelgarden – Myggenas (n.d.) by Sámal Joensen-Mikines (1906-1979), purchased by Museum Belvédère, was officially presented by director Han Steenbruggen, in the presence of King's Commissioner Arno Brok, Alderman for Culture of the municipality of Heerenveen Hedwich Rinkes and guests.
Museum Belvédère is preparing a major exhibition by Sámal Joensen Mikines, which will be on display in the summer of 2025.
In the run-up to that exhibition, the museum managed to acquire this important painting. A painting characteristic in theme and style within his oeuvre.
Sámal Joensen Mikines was born on and named after the island of Mykines, which is part of the Faroe Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The unruly landscape, the coastal regions and the sea of the archipelago became his great subjects.
Far from the major art centers, Mikines developed an expressionist way of painting, in which he paid great attention to atmosphere, light and color.
Mikines is considered the most important artist of the Faeroe Islands. His work is widely represented in the National Museum of Modern Art in Thorshavn and in several museums in Denmark.
Oranjewoud, June 17 to September 24, 2023
Museum Belvédère, together with Museum Rembrandthuis, has been selected for the 'Buitenkans' (Oppertunity) campaign, a project initiated by the Turing Foundation and the Rembrandt Association, in which museums were invited to devise a presentation around one or more iconic works of art from another Dutch museum.
From the sixteen entries, the plans of Museum Rembrandthuis and Museum Belvédère were selected as the most feasible and appealing. The aim of the 'Buitenkans' campaign is to demonstrate the wealth of Dutch public art collections and to stimulate loan traffic between museums.

The painting Natura Morta (1955) by the Italian still life painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), which Museum Belvédère received in 2018 at the time of the Morandi and Bologna exhibition, is the starting point of our presentation Morandi and the Netherlands (June 17 to September 24, 2023).
After five years we are following up this successful exhibition with the beautiful 'opportunity' loans from the Kunstmuseum, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and Stedelijk, among others.

We are ringing in the new year festively with our 1000th and 1001st Friend! In 2004 we welcomed our first Friend and 18 years later we passed the 1000 mark with Sanders' registration as a Friend and the Friends membership gift for his parents.
Sander and his wife Sofie live in Belgium but can often be found in Friesland, where Sander grew up and where his family still lives. A family visit is often combined with a visit to Museum Belvédère, which for Sander feels like coming home: “coming back to the works of art you have built a bond with.” His connection with Belvédère goes back to the construction of the building: “During the construction of the museum I took a small piece of basalt stone with me...”
Coincidentally, Sanders' father is a second cousin of artist Sjoerd de Vries, who, together with founder Thom Mercuur and Boele Bregman, dreamed of a home for Frisian art. He therefore gave his parents the Friends membership so they also can experience unlimited access to the works of their family member, among other works of art.

Museum Belvédère looks back on a successful 4th edition of the Art Noord art fair, which was held in the museum from 6 to 9 October. More than 1,800 people visited the four-day fair where 17 galleries presented themselves and our own branch EXIT BLV also had a stand. During the weekend, the museum organized extra activities such as interviews and lectures. During all days there were live drawing sessions by artists Christiaan Kuitwaard and Gosse Koopmans. They have depicted each other in different ways and show the results later in the museum in a small presentation.

On Wednesday 5 October, art fair Art Noord opened and director Han Steenbruggen handed over the first copy of the collection book Collected Works of Museum Belvédère to alderman for Culture and Economic Affairs Hedwich Rinkes of Heerenveen. Kunstbeurs Art Noord is the only museum art fair in the Netherlands and takes place from Thursday 6 October to Sunday 9 October in Museum Belvédère in Heerenveen.
What once started with a collection of loans, grew into an extensive museum collection. With more than 300 images and a complete list of art objects, the extensive collection book 'Collected Works' provides insight into museum Belvédère's collection policy.
With the collection of works of art that Thom Mercuur (1940-2016) brought together in the founding phase as a substantive conscience, the museum has pushed its boundaries in the years that followed its opening in 2004.
The collection now includes some 800 paintings, 1000 works on paper and just over 100 other types of art objects. The bulky book is for sale in the museum. Photo: Marc the photographer.

Does Museum Belvédère support the farmers, or is the long line of straw bales outside the building part of an exhibition? And do you look at a bale of ryegrass in the landscape differently than in a museum hall? Harvest is the latest and current work by visual artist Merijn Vrij (1971).
In the context of the Upstream event, he conducted research into the history and development of the landscape in Southeast Friesland. Where once plenty of peat was extracted, an agricultural livestock area arose in the last century. Quite wondered whether the current intensive agriculture will have the same effect on the landscape as the peat excavations that were exhausting at the time. And whether the bales of ryegrass, like blocks of peat, will be on display in museums as a reminder of what once was.

Museum Belvédère has acquired the work Hyperion (2022) by Henrik Kröner. The canvas, which looks like a thin colored pencil drawing on thin checked fabric, evokes associations with the paper of a simple arithmetic notebook. However, Kröner does not use paper, but cloth with a grid woven into it.
With the title, Kröner refers to Hyperion from Greek mythology, who is also called the titan of light and the god
of observation. Hyperion was said to be the first to understand the movements of the sun, moon, and other stars, throughout the seasons. Hyperion was part of A square dance, Henrik Kröner's solo exhibition at AFSLAG BLV.
Henrik Kröner (1979, Nordhorn, DU) received his art education at the AKI in Enschede and the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen. He has been awarded nominations for Kunstbeeld Art 2005 and Royal Prize for Free Painting, 2014 and was awarded the Buning Brongers Prize in 2006. The artist lives and works in Groningen.
AFSLAG BLV, branch of Museum Belvédère in the center of Heerenveen, focused on contemporary art, offers a stage to (northern) young talented artists.

After a minor renovation, AFSLAG BLV will start this Sunday March 6 with a new exhibition program and a new programmer. Albert Oost, artist, initiator of melklokaal in Heerenveen and also works as a collection manager at Museum Belvédère, will make four exhibitions a year in the coming years in the annex of Museum Belvédère, located in the Heerenveense School in the center of Heerenveen.

The time has come... your Abe is coming home! After an exciting search, the painting that Jeanne Bieruma Oosting painted of football legend Abe Lenstra has resurfaced.
The original owner is now enjoying being reunited with his long-lost work, but is willing to lend it out for our exhibition on the free-spirited artist, which opens on April 9, 2022!

A small presentation with various works by Jan Mankes (1889-1920) can be seen in the entrance area of Huize Oranjewoud, a 15-minute walk from Museum Belvédère. In addition to a small number of paintings and drawings, the presentation includes etchings and woodcuts, as well as the associated woodblocks and etching plates. The works were purchased from the heirs of Jan Mankes, among others, and belong to the art collection of Stichting FB Oranjewoud (the former Friesland Bank collection).
The presentation can only be viewed by appointment on Thursdays between 2 pm and 4 pm.
The estate is also accessible by car, a few minutes' drive from Museum Belvédère.

Museum Belvédère has acquired the painting Exodus – Hungarian Uprising by Ruloff Manuputty from 1956. This acquisition has rewarded a great desire and years of patience. Museum Belvédère had been looking for a representative work by Ruloff Manuputty (1926-2002) for some time. He made this painting following the brutal suppression of the Hungarian popular uprising in 1956, with the memory of the events in Indonesia still fresh in his mind. Exodus – Hungarian Uprising is one of the masterpieces from Manuputty's oeuvre and can now be seen in Museum Belvédère.
Ruloff Manuputty was born in Ambon and emigrated to the Netherlands after the struggle for independence in Indonesia. After an art education in Amsterdam and wanderings in Switzerland and Germany, he settled in Groningen, where he started working as a designer-draftsman at the printing studio Havé. In 1964, Manuputty was appointed as a teacher at the Vredeman de Vries Academy in Leeuwarden, and was appointed director a year later. He continued to manage the Frisian Art Academy until 1987 and also lived in Friesland for a long time.
In addition to his permanent jobs, Manuputty developed as an independent artist. He mainly worked in Groningen and built up a considerable reputation there. In his work he drew on the rich visual traditions of his native country - such as batik art - and on the modern art he came to know in Europe - Picasso, Klee, among others. The painting Exodus – Hungarian Uprising is one of the early examples of this.

Museum Belvédère gaat vanaf 2021 een partnerschap aan met Stichting FB Oranjewoud. De komende vier jaren ondersteunt deze stichting het museum jaarlijks met een structureel bedrag. Een deel daarvan is bestemd voor grote tentoonstellingen met internationale uitstraling en allure. Een ander deel is gereserveerd voor kleinere tentoonstellingen.
In 2021 verbindt FB Oranjewoud zich aan de geplande zomerexpositie ‘Jan Mankes – de dieren en de ziel der dingen’ en aan de grote najaarstentoonstelling 'Arranged Realism' waarin beeldende kunst uit de
virtuele werkelijkheid van games centraal staan.
Museum Belvédère en FB Oranjewoud onderhouden al langer een relatie. Zo is de kunstcollectie van FB Oranjewoud sinds 2012 ondergebracht bij het museum en was in 2013 een grote tentoonstelling van die collectie te zien in het museum en op Landgoed Oranjewoud, tevens het hoofdkantoor van FB Oranjewoud. Met het nieuwe partnerschap worden de banden nog steviger aangehaald.
Voorzitter Jorrit Volkers van Stichting FB Oranjewoud verklaart: ‘Het landgoed en het museum zijn landschappelijk met elkaar verbonden. Wij zijn er blij mee dat we als goede buren dit partnerschap met elkaar aan gaan. Bovenal hebben we vertrouwen in de koers en de ambities van het museum.’
Museumdirecteur Han Steenbruggen is verheugd over de samenwerking: ‘het stelt ons in staat om onze internationale projecten in optimale vorm uit te voeren en om als museum door te ontwikkelen.’

In deze uitdagende tijden voor musea is er gelukkig ook goed nieuws te melden! Museum Belvédère zag onlangs maar liefst drie aanvragen gehonoreerd. We zijn in aanmerking gekomen voor de Compensatie-regeling Coronacrisis van het Mondriaan Fonds voor middelgrote musea. Het doel van deze tijdelijke regeling is tegemoet te komen aan de gederfde inkomsten vanwege de beperkende maatregelen.
Daarnaast zijn we gehonoreerd door het Kickstart Cultuurfonds, wat betekent dat gewenste aanpassingen doorgevoerd kunnen worden ten aanzien van het coronabeleid.
Museum Belvédère heeft gekozen voor enkele unieke initiatieven, die zijn ontwikkeld door kunstenaarsduo vogelsang/oost (Monique Vogelsang en Albert Oost).
In de westvleugel is een presentatie over Hendrik Werkman (1882-1945) te zien, waarbij een nieuwe publicatie is verschenen. Zowel de expositie als de uitgave zijn mogelijk gemaakt dankzij de Vereniging Rembrandt en de Turing Foundation. Hun landelijke actie ‘De kracht van onze Nederlandse collecties’ stelde ons in staat om de schijnwerpers te richten op bijzondere collectiestukken.

Met het plan voor een presentatie rond de Groninger kunstenaar Hendrik Werkman is Museum Belvédère geselecteerd door de Vereniging Rembrandt en de Turing Foundation. De tentoonstelling Hendrik Werkman – van Voerman tot Baalschem is in het najaar te zien, van 3 oktober 2020 t/m 10 januari 2021. Er zal tevens een publicatie bij verschijnen.
Museum Belvédère stelt een coherente reeks kunstwerken van Hendrik Werkman (1882-1945) centraal, één van de belangrijkste modernisten uit Noord-Nederland. Een belangrijk onderdeel van de presentatie zijn de vroege druksels Schoorstenen, Compositie met letter a, Compositie met gewichten en Compositie, een volledige reeks uitgaven The Next Call en één van Werkmans belangrijkste schilderijen
Voerman uit 1923. Deze werken werden door kunstverzamelaars Pleun en Mieke van Toledo in nauwe samenspraak met het museum verworven en als langdurig bruikleen in het museum ondergebracht.
Alle werken zijn afkomstig uit de voormalige collectie van architect en schilder Job Hansen (1899-1960), een vriend van Werkman. Zo werd postuum gestand gedaan aan de wens van Hansen – en de verplichting die dochter Caty Hansen jegens haar vader voelde – ze als groep te waarborgen. De expositie omvat verder druksels uit alle fasen van Werkmans kunstenaarschap. De collectie Van Toledo geeft dan ook een representatief beeld van Werkmans artistieke ontwikkeling.
Met de tentoonstelling en de uitgave Hendrik Werkman – van Voerman tot Baalschem wil Museum Belvédère de aandacht vestigen op een bijzondere Werkman-collectie, maar ook op de betekenis die gepassioneerd particulier collectioneren kan hebben voor musea. Tevens vormt ze een eerbetoon aan de kunstenaar die zijn persoonlijke vrijheid vond in zijn werk en uiteindelijk vlak voor het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog bij Bakkeveen werd gefusilleerd.

In het herdenkingsjaar van Jan Mankes kan Museum Belvédère maar liefst vier werken van de kunstenaar aan de collectie toevoegen. Het betreft een schenking van de verzamelaar Cees Röling. Twee ervan, Puttertjes in avondschemering uit 1911 en Vrouw in interieur uit 1913, had het museum al enige tijd in bruikleen. De andere werken die Röling schonk, zijn de twee ongedateerde schilderijen Stilleven met boek en fles en Pruimenboompje in bloei. Het laatste is een tot nog toe onbekend gebleven, vroeg schilderijtje, afkomstig uit de nalatenschap van de kunstenaar. Het laat goed zien hoe Mankes zocht naar een persoonlijke stijl. De vier werken vertegenwoordigen verschillende aspecten van Mankes’ kunstenaarschap; stillevens, landschappen, interieurs en dieren.
Dit jaar is het honderd jaar geleden dat de schilder op dertigjarige leeftijd overleed aan de gevolgen van tbc. De expositie die het museum over Mankes in voorbereiding had, is vanwege de coronacrisis uitgesteld naar de zomer van 2021. De nieuwe aanwinsten zullen getoond worden zodra de deuren van Museum Belvédère weer open kunnen.

Rabobank Heerenveen en Museum Belvédère gaan een verbintenis aan voor drie jaar. De bank treedt gedurende deze periode op als hoofdsponsor van twee grote tentoonstellingen en wordt ook betrokken bij andere projecten.
De twee bijzondere projecten waaraan Rabobank zich verbindt zijn Contre l’Oubli – tegen het vergeten in het voorjaar van 2020 en Arranged Reality – art from a virtual era in het najaar van 2021. Contre l’Oubli – tegen het vergeten wordt georganiseerd in het kader van 75 jaar vrijheid en omvat werk van de Joodse kunstenares Edith Auerbach (1899-1994) en een groot familieportret dat kunstenaar Frank Lisser (1958) opdroeg aan zijn moeder en haar Joodse ouders, ooms en tantes.

De tentoonstelling Arranged Reality organiseert het museum in nauwe samenwerking met Indietopia en speelt in op de nieuwste ontwikkelingen binnen de game-industry. Museum Belvédère zal in de sponsorperiode 2020-2022 bij de genoemde projecten speciale acties ontwikkelingen voor relaties en klanten van de Rabobank. Dankzij het partnerschap kan het museum ook het gewenste randprogramma bij de tentoonstelling Contre l’Oubli realiseren. Zo wordt op vrijdagavond 15 mei de De dochter van Meijer in het museum opgevoerd door Pauline Broekema en The Amsterdam Consort, een voorstelling met muziek naar het succesvolle boek Het uiterste der zee van Pauline Broekema.
Rob Lijzenga van de Rabobank verheugt zich op een vruchtbare samenwerking: ‘Museum Belvédère is een prachtig museum waar bezoekers heel laagdrempelig door de wisselende exposities uitgedaagd worden anders naar de wereld te kijken, daarom verbinden wij ons van harte aan dit museum’. Han Steenbruggen van Museum Belvédère noemt de nieuwe sponsorovereenkomst een geweldige opsteker. ‘Het stelt ons in staat twee belangrijke projecten optimaal vorm te geven en de betekenis ervan in gezamenlijkheid uit te dragen.’

De expositie over de eigenzinnige expressionist Jaap Min (1914-1987) is de eerste museale tentoonstelling van zijn werk en betekent een herontdekking van de schilder. De Stichting Jaap Min verheugt zich in die nieuwe belangstelling en schonk één van zijn werken aan het museum. Het gaat om ‘Leeg landschap’ (1987, 80 x 100 cm, olieverf op doek), dat door directeur-conservator Han Steenbruggen ‘een geweldig schilderij van een waarachtig kunstenaar’ wordt genoemd. Het is een aanwinst voor de collectie: ‘Ik zie dit doek in veel opzichten als de eindbestemming van Min. Het is de apotheose van een schildersleven lang zoeken naar de diepere betekenis van aardse zaken.’ De schilderkunst van Min kwam voort uit het Bergense expressionisme, maar ontwikkelde zich in een sterk persoonlijke richting. Hij legde een opvallende melancholie in het Noord-Hollandse landschap, dat hij schilderde in zware tonen en grove toetsen. Het landschap was zijn hoofdthema, maar hij schilderde ook kopjes, stillevens en religieus getint werk.

In het voorjaar van 2018 was in Museum Belvédère een tentoonstelling te zien van de Italiaanse grootmeester van het stilleven Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964). Naar aanleiding daarvan besloten de bruikleengevers van één van de tentoongestelde werken hun schilderij aan het museum te schenken. De schenking vindt plaats in zeven jaarlijkse termijnen, waarmee het museum zich in 2024 volledig eigenaar mag noemen.
Natura Morta uit 1955 behoorde tot de hoogtepunten van de tentoonstelling. Het is een geweldige aanwinst voor het museum, dat zich in zijn beleid sterk richt op meer poëtische vormen van schilderkunst.
‘Morandi is de favoriete schilder van veel kunstenaars van wie wij werk verzamelen’, verklaart directeur-conservator Han Steenbruggen. ‘De grote wens een tentoonstelling van Morandi’s werk samen te stellen, hebben we kunnen realiseren, maar nooit hadden we verwacht een stilleven van hem te kunnen verwerven.’
De presentatie van de aanwinst zal plaatsvinden in het najaar van 2019 tijdens de grote collectietentoonstelling die Museum Belvédère ter gelegenheid van zijn 15-jarig jubileum organiseert.

Museum Belvédère is de winnaar van de eerste Agnes van den Brandeler-prijs. Het museum ontvangt een bedrag van 50.000 euro, dat besteed zal worden aan een monografische tentoonstelling over het werk van de kunstenaar Olphaert den Otter (1955), die plaats zal vinden in het najaar van 2020. De Agnes van den Brandeler-prijs is een nieuwe, dit jaar ingestelde, jaarlijkse prijs voor middelgrote musea. Aan de prijs is een geldbedrag verbonden, bedoeld voor een project waarin een kunstenaar (geboren voor 1978) die ten onrechte weinig aandacht heeft gehad uitgebreid wordt belicht.
